Archaeology in Cat Ba island
Cat Ba’s favourable environment and nature is a good condition for human to settle and live. Therefore, Cat Ba used to be cradle of ancient Vietnamese people.
Archaeologists have excavated the remains of 17 points in Cat Ba island. The results show that up to 15 points have traces of ancient Vietnamese people such as Eo Bua in Hien Hoa cummune, Tung Ba in the national parks, Khoan Mui in Tran Chau commune, Ang Giua in Viet Hai commune. Especially, it’s refered to Cai Beo relic discovered by French Archaeologists in 1938. They axcavated this relic many times in 1972, 1973 and 1981, as the result they collected 479 valuable objects including working tools such as pestle, grinding table, axe, grater, net thread, kitchen relic, human bones (maybe a part of Otxtrolo, Melanedieng group), fish bones, animal teeth bones (forest pig, deer, milk goat…). The analysis result of Dioxide Carbon shows that ancient Vietnamese people were present here 6,475 – 4,200 years ago (afterwards, Cat Ba was sunk in the deep sea). They may be the first population occupying the Northest Sea of Vietnam, exploring sea and doing agriculture. The trace between two early and late cultures exists between two upper and lower layers. Come documents show that Cai Beo ancient people lived in new Paleolithics age about 4,000 years ago. This also base for scientific research at national level.
